Farm Signs are essential in Farm safety, Farm protection, Risk Management and are also required by legislation. There are many types of signs that all farms should consider.
Perimeter Signs
Police across Australia recommend displaying “No Trespass” or “Security Signage” on boundaries to clearly indicate that it is a private property. This can deter illegal hunters, shooters and other intruders
Farm Biosecurity
Farm Biosecurity involves a range of Day to Day practices that can help keep infectious diseases, pests and weeds off a property. These practices are usually documented in a farm biosecurity plan.
There are 2 main parts to a farm biosecurity plan:
1 – Measures to reduce the risk of introducing an infectious disease, pest or weeds onto the property
2 – Measures to reduce the risk of spreading an infectious disease, pest or weeds within the property
Farm Biosecurity signage is essential for all farm properties. See more info

Internal Signage
Police also recommend displaying warning signs such as “Beware of the Dog” or property monitoring or camera systems.
Conflict Zones
If you have a public road running through your property or a driveway that runs through paddocks where livestock maybe grazing, then signage such as Warning signs for Cattle, Sheep or any other livestock should be displayed. Also gate signage such as “Shut the Gate” to prevent stock wandering from the property.
Chemical and Hazchem Signage
These are governed by strict State By State rules. For example in Victoria signs stating “Chemical Storage”, “No Smoking” and “Authorised Staff Only” are required on storage entry points. Fuel and Diesel must have appropriate Hazchem signage.
Other items to manage chemical and fuel is appropriate Spill Kits and wayfinding signage. No Smoking signage etc should be mandatory.
Hazard Signage
Danger and Warning signs are always a good option to reduce the hard risk on farms. It is always better to safe than sorry. Signs such as Dam Drowning risks, speed restriction, shared zones, crush points, overhead powerlines should be an essential part of risk management practises.
Mandatory or Protective Signage
There are many locations on the farm that require protective equipment to be worn. Install signs to remind staff or family members to wear ear muffs, goggles, gloves, ventilation masks etc. Other signage such as confined spaces, height safety harness can be beneficial.
Road Signs
Each state has specific legislation regarding road signage when mustering or livestock on unfenced properties. All must comply with state road regulations and reflective requirements. Items such as swing frames, fixed signage, Multimessage frame and Beacon Flashing lights can be used displaying livestock crossings.
