New legislation came into action as of May 1st in Queensland and most parts of Australia. I wanted to share some vital information about silica dust hazards that we should all be aware of, especially if you work in industries like construction, mining, or manufacturing.

 

Silica dust is a fine particle that can be generated when working with rocks, sand, or soil containing silica. Breathing in this dust can pose serious health risks, including:

 

Silicosis: A lung disease causing scarring and impairing lung function.

Lung Cancer: Increased risk of developing lung cancer.

Tuberculosis: Greater susceptibility to tuberculosis infection.

 

Here’s what we can do to protect ourselves and our colleagues:

 

Engineering Controls: Use local exhaust ventilation and wet methods to control dust generation.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear N95 respirators and appropriate gear to prevent inhalation.

Work Practices: Follow safe work practices, such as dust suppression techniques and proper equipment use.

Training and Awareness: Educate ourselves on silica dust hazards and protective measures.

Medical Surveillance: Regular health check-ups to monitor any signs of lung diseases.

Signage; Notification of hazardous area’s and mandatory PPE requirements
